Our original Hot Lava Chocolate Cake is the perfect end to a memorable dining experience at Chart House. Not only does the mansion have an infinity pool in the yard, but the pool has a small private island in the middle with a little bridge connecting to it. A late 2013 auction was not a success, when buyers who were willing to pay at least the $13 million reserve price for the estate failed to materialize. He chose that asking price because the digits add up to his playing-career uniform number of 23. Michael Jordan spent millions to customize the home to his liking, but individual tastes don’t always match those of interested buyers.
MJ himself lived in the main house for 19 years.
The library upstairs is said to be MJ’s favourite room, according to realestate.com.au. Aside from containing his book collection, it also features a pull-down film screen so it can easily be converted into a cinema. The property also reportedly boasts a three-bedroom guest house which has its own family room and kitchen. The NBA superstar’s home was built at the height of his career and comes with 9 bedrooms, 14 parking spaces, and some pretty out-of-the-ordinary customizations — including a door taken straight from the original Playboy mansion. Adam Rosenfeld, of the luxury real estate start-up Mercer Vine, told Marketwatch in 2016 that Jordan was likely struggling to sell the house because of all of the personalised customisations. When Michael Jordan put his home up for sale in 2012, he was hoping that someone would take it off the market for a whopping $29 million.
Real Estate
He’s a lifelong Buffalo Bills fan from Western New York who mistakenly thought, back in the early ’90s, that his team would be in the Super Bowl every year. He started following European soccer — with a Manchester City focus — in the early 2000s after spending far too much time playing FIFA. Finally, it is often challenging to find buyers who can afford to purchase and maintain such a large house. For example, according to CNBC, rapper 50 Cent also waited around a decade for his massive compound in Farmington, Connecticut to sell.
Michael Jordan's 56,000-square-foot, 7-acre compound in Highland Park, Illinois, looks massive even from the air.
However, he also listed the four-acre mountain property — which was built into a hillside overlooking the Glenwild Golf Course and the surrounding mountains — for sale back in 2019 for $7.5 million. Since Utah is a non-disclosure state (which means property sales are not a matter of public record), we don’t know whether Michael ended up selling the house. Shaq’s house lingered on the market after first listing for $28 million — likely priced aggressively in order to leave room for negotiations. A few price drops later, Shaquille O’Neal finally found a buyer in late October 2020, when he sold his Orlando estate for $11,000,000. Regardless of the celebrity status of their owners, mansions priced over $10 million — especially those set outside of luxury hot spots like Los Angeles or New York City — take years to find the right buyer. Just ask 50 Cent, whose massive compound in Farmington, Connecticut took 12(!) years to sell.
Jordan married his first wife, Juanita Vanoy, in 1989, and the pair purchased a Chicago penthouse together a few years later for $3 million. The 8,000-square-foot dwelling was made up of units on the 39th and 40th floor combined and included four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms overlooking Lake Michigan and the city skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows. The home featured an open layout with an all-glass solarium that housed a lounge and dining area, as well as a media room with a built-in humidor (Jordan is a known cigar fan). The penthouse also boasted a private rooftop deck measuring 1,000 square feet with a built-in grill, professional landscaping, and multiple areas for entertaining. The couple divorced in 2006, and Vanoy, a real estate agent, eventually sold the property for $3.2 million in 2014.
Why can’t Michael Jordan sell his house? - Crain's Chicago Business
The stone-and-wood mansion measures 9,574 square feet and features a total of five bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The grandeur begins at the entrance, with a museum-like stone walkway leading up to a double-height glass door. The interiors are no less impressive, with high-quality finishes like Italian marble, bamboo floors, granite countertops, and Swiss pearwood throughout. The primary suite even boasts a private balcony overlooking the Wasatch Mountains and the Glenwild Golf Club. Jordan ultimately listed the lavish getaway for $7.5 million in 2019, but it does not look like he’s found the right buyer just yet. Today, Jordan owns an 11-bedroom, 28,000-square-foot, $12.4 million mansion on 3 acres in Jupiter, Fla.
Michael Jordan’s homes are, perhaps, almost as impressive as his basketball accomplishments. During his career and since his (final) retirement, Jordan has also invested much of his fortune in real estate, acquiring a handful of multimillion-dollar mansions over the years. Jordan also owns residences in Utah, Florida, and his home state of North Carolina.
But perhaps the most astonishing fact about this mansion is that it boasts 19 bathrooms – 15 of them full sized. As a prospective buyer approaches the gated property, he or she is greeted by the bold display of Jordan’s iconic number 23 emblazoned on the wrought-iron gate. The driveway is flanked by lush greenery, leading to the impressive nine-bedroom, 19-bathroom (15 full and 4 partial), and 14-car garage house located at 2700 Point Lane. Just outside the basketball court is a meeting area where Michael undoubtedly spent time with his former Bulls teammates. In 2015, the property’s listing agent at that time stated that, as an incentive, they would give a buyer every edition of Air Jordans in their size.
The mansion’s listing on Zillow says the property was built in 1995 and was only lived in for 17 years before it went on the market — almost just as long as the retired Chicago Bulls legend has been trying to sell it. The grounds of the mansion house a tennis court as well as a small golfing area, complete with Jumpman golf flags. While those quirks don’t help, the biggest reason the Michael Jordan mansion is still on the market is the price and location.
Fast-forward 12 years, and the Highland Park, Illinois, property still awaits a new owner, now being offered at an asking price nearly half of the initial ambitious valuation envisioned by the NBA legend and his real estate agents. Michael's house has a regulation-size basketball court, splashed with his name and the Jumpman logo. He used to have his teammates over on some practice days to lift weights and eat breakfast before going to the official team practice, according to former teammate Randy Brown.
According to Market Watch, Jordan originally listed the property for US$29 million in 2012. He then tried to auction the house in 2013, but the minimum bid of US$13 million was never met. The estate remains unsold despite attempts to get creative, including marketing to wealthy people in basketball-crazed China.
A visit to the cigar room shows a decorated ceiling and a high level of detail. It also has plenty of card tables where we’re guessing Jordan played some high-stakes poker games – he is known for his love of gambling, after all. One set of doors have been taken from the original Playboy Mansion in Chicago, and they lead to a game room with a pool table. So let’s take a closer look at this extravagant 56,000 sq ft house in an attempt to discover the real reason why it’s struggling to find a buyer. As a longtime self-professed sports junkie who even played DII lacrosse at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, Tim loves reading about all the latest sports news every day and considers it a dream to write about sports professionally.
Despite being in a wealthy area outside a major city, Jordan’s former home “is about 30 times the median price of homes in the upscale Chicago suburb” (h/t Forbes). Although His Airness’ listing price today of $14.85 million is almost exactly half of the $29 million amount that he once had sought for the nine-bedroom mansion and its 7.37-acre property, he still has found no takers. And he has clung to his current $14.85 million asking price now for almost seven years.
The results are a home that feels like it is a Wright project that was commissioned just last year and only recently completed; it represents the beauty and grace of both form and function that Wright himself embraced. And although he may not have approved, the structural steel that has now been added to the building has provided a roof that will never again leak. The clay roof tiles, by the way, were made to original specifications in a special run by the company that had originally manufactured them back in 1909; the one-hundred-plus leaded-glass windows are beyond amazing. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1908 for a prominent Grand Rapids Clothier, the Meyer May House was purchased by Steelcase Inc. in 1985, meticulously restored and opened to the public in 1987. Today, complete with original furnishings and faithfully executed reproductions, the Meyer May house provides the rare opportunity to experience a Prairie house exactly as Frank Lloyd Wright intended. Meticulously, painstakingly and lovingly restored, this home is more than just an excellent example of what Mr. Wright was capable.

Meyer May (1873–1936) was a prominent merchant who became president of A. The Mays influenced the decision of the David Ambergs, Sophie's parents, to build a Wright house a few blocks away. In 1985 Steelcase, Inc., acquired the May house and accurately and meticulously restored it and the existing original furnishings to museum quality. It won the distinction of a President's Historic Preservation Award for corporate-sponsored preservation in 1988, sponsored by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the U.S.

In 1985 Steelcase, Inc., the manufacturers of Wright’s Johnson Wax furniture, embarked on a two-year, museum-quality restoration of the home and returned it to its original 1910 condition. The Meyer and Sophie Amberg May house was Wright's first large commission in Michigan and one of only two residential buildings (KT35) in the state, other than resort cottages, from Wright's Prairie house period. The two-story, T-plan residence is situated on the northern edge of the corner lot to take full advantage of the southern light. The shallow-pitched hipped roof covered with red tiles slopes to broad overhangs, emphasizing the horizontality and hovering quality of the house as shelter. Leaded- and colored-glass-accented casement windows and doors open out to terraces and gardens with garden walls and planters, all incorporated in the design to intermingle the interior and the exterior. Wright hired George M. Niedecken of the Milwaukee firm of Niedecken-Walbridge Company to supervise and execute the interior decorative details.
Restoration
In honor of that collaboration, the Meyer May House is owned and maintained by Steelcase today. The Meyer house was purchased by Steelcase in 1985 and has since been masterfully restored.
Steelcase & Frank Lloyd Wright
The windows, rugs and other textile finishes, built-ins, grilles, and brass fixtures of the residence exhibit a harmonious continuity that reflect Niedecken’s sophisticated understanding of Wright’s design philosophy. The house is characterized by an overriding luminescence that is the result not only of its abundant fenestration, but also the application of rich materials. The brickwork around the living room fireplace features mortar speckled with golden glass that offers a luxurious contrast to the plaster and brick of Wright’s typical interiors. The dining table, modeled on Wright’s own design for the dining room of his Oak Park Home, includes four piers that support electrified lamps with glass shades ornamented with patterns that echo the abstractions found in the windows and rugs of the house. This 1908 masterpiece of the prairie-style design is the most complete restoration of a Frank Lloyd Wright house in existence. The owners, Steelcase Inc., spared no expense in reproducing in exact detail all furnishings and original grandeur.

Commissioned (apparently his first commission in Michigan) by Sophie and Meyer May (a Grand Rapids clothing store owner) in 1908, the home was completed in 1909… only to undergo significant changes over the ensuing decades, not the least of which was the change to a multi-unit rental in the mid ‘60s. Its deterioration had progressed slowly but steadily over the years and the home was in a sad state of disrepair when the Steelcase Company purchased the property in 1985. Wright’s frequent collaborator, and former Studio employee, George Mann Niedecken, supervised and coordinated the interior of the May house.

It is carefully sited to allow maximum southern exposure for the living room windows and skylights, and to create a spacious yard for the perennial gardens. Each terrace and art glass window is carefully arranged to bring nature into the house wherever possible. Wright’s characteristic attention to detail and visual unity is particularly apparent inside, where much of the space is defined by built-in cabinetry and geometrically patterned screens. Art glass windows, ceiling panels, and lanterns play off of the gold glass used in the mortar joints of the fireplace to create a completely light-filled space. Significantly altered in 1922, the home fell into decline following Meyer’s death in 1936.
Also worthy of note is a pastel mural of hollyhocks rendered by George Niedecken, an “interior architect” who had worked with Wright previously. It was discovered – beneath six layers of paint on a wall separating the dining room from the living room – and lovingly restored. There is no charge to tour the house and view the film, The Renewing of a Vision. The Steelcase and Frank Lloyd Wright connection began in 1936 when Steelcase was contracted to manufacture Wright-designed furniture for the Johnson Wax Administration Building in Racine, Wisconsin.
SAH Archipedia tells the story of the United States through its buildings, landscapes, and cities. This freely available resource empowers the public with authoritative knowledge that deepens their understanding and appreciation of the built environment. Designed for a progressive and prominent Grand Rapids clothier, during the decades after the Meyer May house was completed it changed significantly and deteriorated slowly. A large addition was made in 1921 to accommodate May’s growing family, and in the mid-1960s the house became a multi-unit rental with carports and extra entrances.
In 1987 Steelcase fully restored it to Wright’s original design, preserving the house exactly as he intended. It stands today in its original form, exactly as Wright envisioned and intended; it is once again as glorious as anyone could imagine. From the exterior landscaping to the intricate details in the interior, this property is as magnificent as Wright himself would have desired.
It is a Prairie style home that was designed for Mr. & Mrs. Meyer May in (circa) 1909. Standing proudly – and quite grandly – in the Heritage Hill Historic District of Grand Rapids, Michigan at 450 N. Madison Avenue, it was the subject of a recent visit by my wife and me. In the context of Wright’s career, it was an expression of ideas that grew bolder over time. In the context of contemporary architecture and design, Wright’s impact is still being defined.

If you pay less than 20%, lenders will expect you to pay PMI as part of your mortgage payment each month. PMI can be a helpful tool to make homeownership a reality for anyone who might struggle to save a 20% down payment. But it is a monthly cost in addition to your mortgage, and unlike your mortgage payments, PMI payments will not help you build equity in your home.

A mortgage payment calculator helps you determine how much you will need to pay each month to pay off your mortgage loan by a specific date. The longer the time horizon, the less you’ll pay per month, but the more you’ll shell out in interest over time. Shorter time horizons will require larger monthly payments, but you’ll pay less in interest over the life of your loan.

The actual amount you pay depends on several factors including the assessed value of your home and local tax rates. Homeowner's insurance is based on the home price, and is expressed as an annual premium. The calculator divides that total by 12 months to adjust your monthly mortgage payment.

Mortgage Calculator: Estimate Your Monthly Payments.
The table below shows how the size of your down payment will affect your monthly mortgage payment. The mortgage calculator estimates a payment that includes principal, interest, taxes and insurance payment — also known as a PITI payment. These four key components help you estimate the total cost of homeownership. An extra payment is when you make a payment in addition to your regular monthly mortgage payment. Our calculator can factor in monthly, annual, or one-time extra payments. However, borrowers need to understand the advantages and disadvantages of paying ahead on the mortgage.
The organization offers help with securing a home loan as well as up to 4% down payment assistance in the form of a non-repayable grant. With a non-judicial foreclosure in California, you will get a series of notices that will alert you of the impending steps. The lender has to contact you to assess your financial situation in what’s called a foreclosure avoidance assessment. The foreclosure process cannot start until at least 30 days after you were contacted for the assessment. After that, a Notice of Default can be recorded in your county.
The average down payment varies a great deal depending on the age of the buyer, as well. Nonetheless, borrowers should keep in mind that banks may impose stipulations governing prepayments since they reduce a bank's earnings on a given mortgage. These conditions may consist of a penalty for prepayments, a cap on how much borrowers can pay in a lump sum form, or a minimum amount specified for prepayments.
California has had a slow recovery from the recession compounded by a lack of affordable housing. The state has some of the highest median home values in the country, as well as a high cost of living. You can also try our home affordability calculator if you’re not sure how much money you should budget for a new home. Under "Down payment," enter the amount of your down payment (if you’re buying) or the amount of equity you have (if refinancing). Once you have a loan, you pay it back in small increments every month over the span of years or even decades. It’s essentially a long, life-changing IOU that helps many Americans bring the dream of homeownership within reach.
With all of this in mind, you can determine what size down payment makes sense for you. The good news is that you can buy a house with less than 20% down though it is a good idea to put down as much as you can. Here are some of the considerations when thinking about how much of a down payment you may need for your dream house. The loan amount is the amount of money you plan to borrow from a lender.
In the early 20th century, buying a home involved saving up a large down payment. Borrowers would have to put 50% down, take out a three or five-year loan, then face a balloon payment at the end of the term. In addition to mortgages options (loan types), consider some of these program differences and mortgage terminology. Zillow's mortgage calculator gives you the opportunity to customize your mortgage details while making assumptions for fields you may not know quite yet.

The more you put down, the less you’ll need to borrow and the less you’ll pay in interest. You’re also more likely to get a better interest rate on your mortgage. If so, a mortgage calculator is a helpful tool that you can use to determine what your monthly mortgage payments might be. Data from the 2022 American Community Survey shows that homeowners paid a median amount of $1,775 per month. This figure includes a mortgage payment, as well as homeowners insurance costs, property taxes, utilities, and HOA fees where necessary. In most cases, the amortized payments are fixed monthly payments spread evenly throughout the loan term. Interest is the fee for borrowing the money, usually a percentage of the outstanding loan balance. The principal is the portion of the payment devoted to paying down the loan balance.
Mortgage calculator terms explained
If you don’t have enough saved for a 20% down payment, you’re going to pay more each month to secure the loan. Buying a home for a lower price or waiting until you have larger down payment savings are two ways to save you from larger monthly payments. Fixed-rate mortgages will have the same total principal and interest amount each month, but the actual numbers for each change as you pay off the loan. You start by paying a higher percentage of interest than principal. Gradually, you’ll pay more and more principal and less interest.
This is the start of the formal and public foreclosure process. If you don’t pay, a Notice of Sale is recorded (no earlier than 90 days after the Notice of Default). The sale will state that your home will be sold at auction in 21 days.
There are a number of government programs available to prospective homebuyers who are struggling to come up with a down payment. These down payment assistance programs may offer help in the form of forgivable grants and low-cost loans. The programs are designed to encourage homeownership and are generally restricted to first-time homebuyers.
This means it's often not the most accurate depiction of what the typical US homeowner actually pays. A better measure of this is the median, which represents the middle number in a data set. Prepayment penalties or lost mortgage interest deductions on tax returns are other examples of opportunity costs. Borrowers should consider such factors before making additional payments. If you are a renter, you are accustomed to charges for utilities, but if you move into a larger house, be prepared for a larger heating and cooling bill. If anything needs repaired, you are responsible for all the parts and installation.
You’re required to pay PMI if you don’t have a 20% down payment and you don’t qualify for a VA loan. The reason most lenders require a 20% down payment is due to equity. If you don’t have high enough equity in the home, you’re considered a possible default liability.

In simpler terms, you represent more risk to your lender when you don’t pay for enough of the home. One of the rules you may hear as a homebuyer is the 28/36 rule or the debt-to-income (DTI) rule. This rule says that your mortgage payment shouldn’t go over 28% of your monthly pre-tax income and 36% of your total debt. This ratio helps your lender understand your financial capacity to pay your mortgage each month. The higher the ratio, the less likely it is that you can afford the mortgage.
If you don’t consider them all, you may budget for one payment, only to find out that it’s much larger than you expected. From down payments to mortgage payments, private mortgage insurance and homeowners insurance, there’s a lot to consider when you’re buying a home. Upfront costs are easy enough to calculate, but one important factor to consider is whether you’ll realistically be able to afford your mortgage payment. You’ll want to make sure you’re ready to buy a house based on your monthly income. Each month, your mortgage payment goes towards paying off the amount you borrowed, plus interest, in addition to homeowners insurance and property taxes.
As a general rule, to qualify for a mortgage, your DTI ratio should not exceed 36% of your gross monthly income. A mortgage is a loan to help you cover the cost of buying a home. This is the amount you borrow from your lender to buy your home. It’s factored into your monthly payment and paid off throughout the life of your loan. There are several factors that determine your interest rate, including your loan type, loan amount, down payment amount and credit history. A down payment of 20% or more will get you the best interest rates and the most loan options.
You can play around with those numbers a little to figure out what kind of monthly payment you can afford. If other fees are rolled into your monthly mortgage payment, such as annual property taxes or homeowners association dues, there may be some fluctuation over time. A mortgage loan term is the maximum length of time you have to repay the loan. Longer terms usually have higher rates but lower monthly payments. It is possible to pay down your loan faster than the set term by making additional monthly payments toward your principal loan balance. Are you considering homeownership for the first time, but aren’t sure what kind of house you can afford?
A table showing the difference in payments, total interest paid and amortization period under both schemes is also displayed. For most borrowers, the total monthly payment sent to your mortgage lender includes other costs, such as homeowner's insurance and taxes. If you have an escrow account, you pay a set amount toward these additional expenses as part of your monthly mortgage payment, which also includes your principal and interest. Your mortgage lender typically holds the money in the escrow account until those insurance and tax bills are due, and then pays them on your behalf.
Despite the relatively frequent occurrence of natural disasters, including wildfires and earthquakes, the state has lower insurance costs than half of the nation. The average annual policy is about $1,027 a year, according to Insurance.com data. While it depends on your state, county and municipality, in general, property taxes are calculated as a percentage of your home’s value and billed to you once a year. In some areas, your home is reassessed each year, while in others it can be as long as every five years. These taxes generally pay for services such as road repairs and maintenance, school district budgets and county general services.
Nonetheless, our mortgage amortization calculator is specially designed for home mortgage loans. Mortgage refinance is the process of replacing your current mortgage with a new loan. Often people do this to get better borrowing terms like lower interest rates. Refinancing requires a new loan application with your existing lender or a new one. Your lender will then re-evaluate your credit history and financial situation. To calculate your DTI ratio, divide your ongoing monthly debt payments by your monthly income.
